There are so many great gift guides circling in the ether right now there’s just no way to meaningfully contribute to what already exists — so I figured I’d opt in by creating a wishlist instead. It’s a two-in-one job, and the best part is, is what’s mine is yours. And that’s the spirit of Christmas.
With utmost sincerity, I genuinely prefer experiences with loved ones. Whether it’s a nice meal or an excursion, presence is my favorite form of present. It checks out that quality time is my preferred form of affection. Yet since cooking classes or reservations to Chez Panisse are not something one can physically unbox on Christmas Day, here are some alternatives instead:
As a woman in her 30s (or in the era of domesticity), I’m in my prime time for leveling up housewares and home appliances. A Michael Grave for Alessi Tea Kettle is the type of kitsch kitchenware that makes coffee at home a significantly more elevated experience. Paired with La Marzocco Linea Mini Espresso Machine, aka the Rolls Royce of coffee makers, I’m ready to turn my kitchen into a café. A timepiece is always a good investment, and I’m particularly fond of cocktail watches for their dainty and delicate design. This Ladies’ Rolex Cocktail Watch is tasteful and timeless, no pun intended. There are a lot of audiophiles living in Los Angeles, and if you hang around long enough, their discernment around speaker systems starts to rub off on you. I love these vintage JBL Blue Line Harman Speaker Set from Japan. If you must give socks, Comme Si is the way to go. People say print is dying, but I beg to differ. You can never go wrong with a Holiday Magazine subscription, the best publication for immersive, visual essays on travel.
Noma Flavor 6-Pack
Nothing says “I love you” to a gourmand more than a trip to Noma, and since the restaurant is closing its doors in 2024, the next best thing is Noma Projects 6-Pack of liquid potions. Now you can forage and add these flavor bombs from home.
And now since I’ve entered the portion where I am simply just dreaming, here is my wishlist ranging from the easily attainable: MAD Contax G to not so attainable, Datsun 240Z, and questionably attainable: A pilgrimage to James Turrel’s Roden Crater. In all honesty, the best gifts are something practical that the receiver doesn’t want to spend money on. So an Erewhon gift card is good too.
